I have had Celiac Disease since I was 11 years old I am now 58 I was diagnosed in UK. When I first moved to USA in 83 people did not know what Gluten free was. This is not a fad it is a pretty serious condition.. I hate that people here find this a big joke.. You would not joke about some one that has other food allergies such as shell fish. so why joke about this. Gluten free is not a fad for everybody some of us have no choice.

David, Just a quick remark about your mom asking at the Mexican restaurant about chips and salsa being gluten free. Many condiments, etc. have hidden gluten. I have learned I have to ask about BBQ sauce, ketchup, mayonnaise, salad dressing, chocolate sauce, etc. Many of these items are not gluten free. You have to ask. To someone that has a problem with gluten, something so simple could throw you body into a tail spin. I know of two people that are so sensitive that the one lady has to watch even hair spray because many hairsprays have a wheat ingredient and even the hairspray makes her so sick. The other lady has to make sure even the colander that is used to noodles that have wheat can not be used for her gluten free noodles or she will instantly get a rash and hives.
Gluten Free is tough to navigate because it is a hidden ingredient in so so many items. Good luck to your mom in her endeavor.
